Project: The development of a research database for the Holland Bloorview Concussion Clinic: Towards a hospital-wide model of clinical research

Investigators:

What was this study about?

The objective of this study was to develop a clinical research database that can house data collected from clients within the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s Concussion Clinic, a clinic dedicated to children who are affected by ongoing concussion symptoms.

What did we do?

The study involved developing a protocol, choosing outcome variables and submitting an application to the Research Ethics Board (REB) for approval. The REB application was successful and approval was granted. The research database was created and the clinical data can now be collected. Approval was also granted for retrospective data collection and past clients can be contacted.

Impact for clients, families and clinical practice

The clinical data collected within this project will allow us to efficiently explore the phenomenon of pediatric concussion and will create an opportunity for client-family specific programming that is evidence-based. We hope the results of the research studies will be implemented to assist clients that are at the greatest risk for poor outcomes.

Further, this study promotes an integrated approach to research that promotes collaboration between clinicians and researchers in order to best meet the needs of the pediatric concussion population, while building the capacity of the interprofessional team members.

Next steps?

This clinical research database is designed to continually grow and evolve in order to meet the needs and clinical practices of the Concussion Clinic at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Secondary applications will be submitted to the Research Ethics Board (REB) in order to explore specific research questions that can be answered using the data housed within the database and to address clinically-relevant issues in order to best meet the needs of the pediatric concussion community

It is hoped that, in time, this database can be accessed by any and all clinicians, researchers and trainees connected to concussion services and research at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. This database aims to connect clinical practice and research within the pediatric concussion population to generate evidence to support improved rehabilitation services.
