We are really excited to create opportunities to bring students from diverse health professional backgrounds together to learn about pediatric rehabilitation. We offer both structured IPE clinical placements and other formal IPE learning activities.

IPE Structured Clinical Placements

Students who express an interest and are selected to join a structured IPE clinical placement are placed as an interprofessional team in a common practice environment. The students discuss and interact with each other at an orientation session and several tutorial sessions which are lead by our IPE facilitators. Learners also work together to develop a group presentation.

The objectives of the IPE structured clinical placement (based on a model developed at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute) are to provide opportunity for students to:

  • develop an increased understanding of the expertise that each discipline brings to the solution of health problems
  • learn and develop clinical expertise together
  • develop an understanding of team dynamics and build communication and conflict resolution skills within the context of a heath care team

Other IPE Sessions for Students

Holland Bloorview offers other IPE session for students on topics relevant to pediatric rehabilitation such as:

  • Collaborative approaches to pain management
  • Collaborative approaches to wound care and prevention
  • The client and family perspective
  • “What you do must be so hard!” A workshop on post-traumatic stress & compassion fatigue in pediatric rehabilitation

"Participating in IPE at Holland Bloorview “allowed me to gain more knowledge of other professionals and their practice. It allowed me to speak more about my discipline and gain comfort with explaining what I do.”

“I will definitely be more willing and less nervous to approach other health professionals with regards to questions and working with clients.”

‘Having learned about what other disciplines do with clients has inspired me to create new interventions that acknowledge and are complementary with interventions in other disciplines and give the client a more cohesive experience.”

“There are no limits to collaboration.”
