Presented by masters student Kamil Pieszczynski of the Bloorview Research Institute, this Research TEDTalk focused on the ways that powered ride-on toys could facilitate greater participation for young children.
Summary
In his TEDTalk, Kamil Pieszczynski outlined the ways that independent exploration contribute to critical neurodevelopment in young children. Unfortunately, many young children with mobility restrictions lack the ability to independently investigate their environments, instead depending on adults to navigate the world for them. Independent mobility solutions like power wheelchairs are often too expensive and heavy for young children to operate.
Building on previous research from a group in the United States, Kamil tapped into the economical and ready-to-use solution of powered children's ride-on toys, to allow young kids the opportunity for independent mobility.
Kamil's results showed that his additional modifications, including a reverse feature on the toy and a more kid-friendly joystick, contributed to better driving safety and independent movement.
