Welcome

The EPIC Lab is part of the Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, Canada, and is led by Dr. Tim Ross. Tim is a Scientist at Holland Bloorview, and Assistant Professor (status) in the Department of Geography and Planning and the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto. He is also a Registered Professional Planner.

The research conducted within the EPIC Lab is geared toward enhancing our understanding of disability experiences, as well as identifying and addressing barriers that may hinder the health, well-being, and community participation of children with disabilities and their families.

Much of the work done in the EPIC Lab falls under four key research areas:

(1) transportation and mobility,

(2) inclusive play,

(3) education access,

(4) addressing institutional ableism.

Questions about ableism and its normalcy within the planning and design of our built environments, services, and systems are central to the Lab’s research. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, as it embraces research partnerships and our team’s backgrounds are wide-ranging (e.g., urban planning, disability studies, occupational therapy, architecture, inclusive design, sociology, and health services).
