Holland Bloorview is excited to help announce the publication of the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation’s new Guidelines for Diagnosing and Managing Pediatric Concussion.
Led by CHEO’s Dr. Roger Zemek, Holland Bloorview scientists and medical professionals were on the team developing the new guidelines over the last two years. The new guidelines will provide a consistent approach for recognizing and managing concussion in children and youth, five to 18 years old. The guidelines will act as a new standard for pediatric concussion care, and reflect the research showing that children’s brains are developing and have different needs when recovering from concussion.
Holland Bloorview experts are available for commentary on the new guidelines and what they mean for pediatric concussion care in Ontario.
The guidelines will be a publicly accessible repository of information about concussion, helping healthcare providers and families to:
- Recognize and manage concussion symptoms, while avoiding activities that can delay recovery
- Get children and youth back to school and play safely
- Understand the unique recovery requirements for the pediatric brain, which behaves and heals differently than the adult brain
The Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation’s new guidelines are publicly available on their website.
The following Holland Bloorview experts were involved in the guideline creation, and are available to provide expert commentary:
- Dr. Ryan Hung – Pediatric Neurologist, Lead in the Holland Bloorview Concussion Clinic
