Celebrating Women in Science at Holland Bloorview
Whether it’s with a focus on research, medicine, operations, or management, women at Holland Bloorview are constantly inspiring others to pursue a career in STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math).
We asked a few staff members and researchers who work in the field what motivates them and what their message is to the next generation of female scientists, pharmacists, researchers, and more.
Toni Lui, social worker and research coordinator in the ProFILE Lab
What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
I have always been interested in learning about the world, human development and relationships by studying it in a systematic way. As a clinician, I help clients and families by providing evidence based interventions and I am motivated to further contribute to this evidence base through research in improving the lives of children with disabilities.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
Your life experiences are unique and you will have a perspective that no other person will have. Dream big, and ask questions no matter how small they may seem because you never know what you might uncover!

What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
Curiosity. I've always been curious to understand and learn how things around me operate. Pursuing engineering has thus pushed me to continue to use that curiosity to come up with creative and innovative solutions that can help move society forward.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
Never be afraid to ask. The power of asking can lead you to opportunities, or even discover a bridge between different fields that you may have never imagined existing!

What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
Science and math was something I always enjoyed and did well in as a young child so when it came to applying to university, I chose to do a biological science degree.
It was during my time in undergraduate studies that I realized I also enjoyed the intersection between the social and biological sciences. That is why I chose to do my Master in Public Health and become a public health professional.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
Think outside of the box. There are so many different types of careers that you can pursue in STEM. Do not limit yourself. Shadow, network and try connecting with diverse people. You may be surprised by what you enjoy.

What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
I am passionate about reimagining the way people interact with technology and strive to make the diagnostics and clinical research more inclusive and patient-centered.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
Dream big and never stop learning!

What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
From a very early age I always had a special interest in scientific and medical matters. I spent most of childhood in and out of the hospital so my interest really sparked during that time.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
My message to future generations would be to not let failure stop you and to inspire others to do the same.
Carly Cermak, PhD candidate, Connect Lab
What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
As a Speech-Language Pathologist that is close to completing my doctoral degree, my goal is to become a clinician-scientist. I am motivated to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice!
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
As a former competitive athlete, I learned that “there are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” The same motto applies in research; keep going and believing in your work even in the midst of setbacks!

What motivated you to pursue a career in STEM?
I knew from a very young age that I wanted a career where I could help others achieve their goals and make a difference in their lives. Becoming a physiotherapist allowed me to pursue my passion and I can say that I truly love what I do everyday.
What is your message to the next generation of scientists?
Become comfortable with the uncomfortable. It's normal and human to feel uncomfortable when trying things you've never done before, but we all start somewhere and you may just surprise yourself through the process!

I have always found a passion and curiosity in science so naturally I have always steered my learning, growth and development in the field of nursing.

Continue to be curious, ask questions and break barriers. You are capable of making an impact so continue to strive for success!
