On September 19, Holland Bloorview held the 2024 STAR Awards in recognition of the hospital’s outstanding clinicians by “Showing Thankfullness, Appreciation and Respect.”
Staff in attendance were treated to heartfelt nomination speeches and moments where award recipients took to the stage to claim their prize before posing for photos.
“Whether it’s working on a project or working through day-to-day challenges, clinicians at Holland Bloorview come with their own individual strengths, expertise and experiences like a melding of superpowers,” says Kristen English, collaborative practice leader. “Working closely with clients and families as partners and co-creators, they provide the exceptional, personalized care that families at Holland Bloorview have come to know and love.”
During the award ceremony, the 2024 Jake’s Award for Amazing Healthcare Providers was also presented. Jake’s Award honours and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care of Holland Bloorview’s health professionals. Jake’s Award is named after Jacob (Jake) Trossman, a client whose wonderful sense of spirit and fun inspired the award’s creation.
The ceremony concluded with Irene Andress, vice president of programs and services and chief nursing executive, presenting a special video featuring collaborative practice leaders and operations managers thanking clinicians for their tireless commitment to fostering healthy teams and delivering world-class care at Holland Bloorview.

- 2024 Team Excellence Award Recipient - Inpatient respiratory therapy team
- 2024 Clinical Excellence Award Recipient - Tracy Lee, physiotherapist
About the STAR Awards
STAR, which stands for “Showing Thankfulness, Appreciation and Respect” is a collaborative practice initiative that was created with the intention of celebrating our health discipline professionals for their accomplishments, and to bring recognition to clinicians’ day-to-day work.
The STAR clinical recognition awards acknowledge and celebrate clinicians at Holland Bloorview for their achievements in clinical excellence, team excellence, innovation by both individuals and teams, and Jake’s Award for outstanding client and family-centred care. What’s extra special about the STAR awards is the process for nominations, which came out of consultation with clinicians during early stages of this initiative; it was decided during these early consults, that nominations for STAR awards would come directly from colleagues as well as clients and families rather than leadership and management.
