Graduate Candidate

PhD Candidate
Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto
Advisor: Dr. Tom Chau

Education

Nicolas completed his Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 2017. During his time at UBC, Nicolas worked as an engineer developing wireless protocols for remote tracking in senior care; as an R&D intern at Synopsys in Silicon Valley designing computer chip synthesis analysis tools and synthesis optimizations; and as a software engineer at a Vancouver start-up focused on embedded computing for computer vision and machine learning. As Team Captain of the UBC Thunderbots Engineering Team, he built robots to play internationally competitive soccer. From 2018 to 2020, Nicolas completed his Master of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto, writing his thesis on new user-assessment metrics and feedback presentation sytems for novice EEG brain-computer interface users.

Research Interests

Nicolas is excited to be a member of the PRISM Lab and to have the opportunity to develop more intuitive communication devices for children with disabilities. Nicolas is interested in the application of machine learning, neuroscience, and instructional design to improve brain-computer interface user-training and improve the reliability of these devices outside of highly controlled laboratory settings.

Other Interests

Nicolas enjoys volleyball, outdoor activities like cycling and snowboarding, tinkering with soccer-playing robots, exploring the world through travel, and is an avid fan of the Vancouver Canucks.
