It is against the law for a school to refuse to admit a child who is under 18 years of age only because the child or the child’s parent or guardian is in Canada without
immigration status.

The Ontario Human Rights Code guarantees the right to equal treatment in education, without discrimination on the ground of disability.
Under the Education Act, the Ministry of Education is responsible for setting out a process for identifying and accommodating disability-related needs in the publicly funded elementary and secondary school systems.
A student with a disability, or his or her parent or guardian, is required to advise the education provider of the need for accommodation, participate in discussions regarding possible accommodation solutions, meet curriculum standards once accommodation is provided, and work with the accommodation provider on an ongoing basis to manage the accommodation process.

Paying for your child’s needs can be expensive but there are funding options available through government resources and non-profit organizations.
If your family is eligible for these funding resources, please follow the application process. This can include filling out an application, getting a letter of support, quotes/receipts, or letter of assessment.
Please note each funding resource has different eligibility and requires different documents and information to qualify and receive funding. Please ensure that you review the criteria before attempting to apply.
Social workers can assist with funding information, eligibility and application filling. The Family Support Team can pass information about funding and determine eligibility, but we cannot support in filling applications.
Even if you have no income to report you should still file your income tax to be eligible to receive certain tax credits and benefits
Some include:
- GST/HST credit
- Canada child tax benefit
- Canada caregiver credit
- Home accessibility tax credit
Some funding resources also require submitting your notice of assessment, which is only given after filing your taxes
