Viral season is here – here is how Holland Bloorview is supporting its community while keeping families and staff safe

As we collectively navigate the rise in cases of seasonal flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is working hard to keep children, youth, families and staff safe and is ready to support the health care system.

As a result of the historic $330 million investment by the Ontario government to expand children’s health care in the province, Holland Bloorview is better able to facilitate the safe and effective flow of patients from acute care to rehabilitation. Recently, our hospital has added four new inpatient rehabilitation beds, increased capacity on our complex continuing care unit and expanded our day program

“With our inpatient clinical care teams ready to address the complex and multi-faceted needs of clients and families, fewer children will be waiting to be discharged from acute care hospitals, many of whom are facing high volumes and growing waitlists,” said A.J. Lopez, senior director, inpatient rehabilitation and complex continuing care (CCC) program.

To keep our clients, families and staff safe, Holland Bloorview has updated its masking policy to help limit virus transmission. As the respiratory season ramps up and cases continue to increase, masking remains an important tool to mitigate transmission. Masks must be worn while moving throughout the hospital, including while in elevators, hallways and washrooms, at all times. Masks must continue to be worn in areas where clients receive care or participate in research.

This infection, prevention and control measure is complemented by our hospital’s annual flu vaccine campaign which encourages all staff, students and volunteers to get their flu shot. This campaign is paired with regular reminders to staff about engaging in other infection control practices including performing good hand hygiene, wearing a mask, and staying home when sick.

We will also be making it easier for staff, clients and families to get their COVID-19 booster through onsite vaccination clinics in partnership with Sunnybrook Hospital. Click here for information on our upcoming accessible, family and sensory-friendly vaccine clinic on Saturday, December 9th.

“As we enter another challenging respiratory season, the health and safety of our clients and families remains our top priority,” said Julia Hanigsberg, president and CEO, Holland Bloorview. “As a community, we are all responsible for doing our part in reducing the spread of viruses and protecting our most vulnerable, including kids and youth with disabilities and medical complexity.”
