Return to play with R2Play: an integrated and inclusive concussion assessment for youth

Summary

The research team at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is developing a system to help youth with concussion return to their sport life (return-to-play). We would like you to test the system, R2Play and get your feedback so we can understand the value and challenges associated with this system.

Researcher(s)

Dr. Shannon Scratch and Dr. Elaine Biddiss.

Call to action

We are looking for youth athletes and clinicians to participate in this research project.

Who can participate

Youth with a history of concussion (formally diagnosed within the past year) ages 10 to 25 years who are current active participants in extracurricular sport activity, have normal or corrected to normal vision and hearing, and can communicate fluently in English. Youth with a history of concussion may participate if they have returned to pre-injury practice and gameplay, or have permission from a clinician to return to pre-injury practice and gameplay. Youth with a recent musculoskeletal injury (within the past 10 days) or a pre-existing physical condition, disability, cardiovascular condition, or neurological disorder that could impair movement or be aggravated by exercise (e.g., running, jumping, lunging, pressing buttons). are not eligible for this study. Youth with a visual, cognitive, or developmental disability, including diagnosed developmental conditions (e.g., ASD, ADHD) and learning disabilities are not eligible for this study only if it interferes with their ability to do physical activities, hear loud noises, or follow instructions and communicate with the research team.

Clinicians who have at least 1 year of experience working with children and adolescents, have clinical experience with concussion or another ABI population, and can communicate fluently in English. Clinicians who cannot commit to a virtual training session, a live training session, two data collection sessions and a follow-up interview (~5 hours in total) are not eligible for this study.

What's involved

Youth will be asked to fill out demographic questionnaires, run through the R2Play assessment with clinicians’ guidance and participate in an interview. Youth will be asked to come in with exercise attire and to wear some biosensors, including a heart rate monitor and movement-sensor. Total time commitment for youth is one and a half hours. Youth and families can learn more about the R2Play study here: https://youtu.be/O3Tr94egs44

Clinicians will be asked to fill out a demographic questionnaire, undergo virtual & in-person training on the R2Play system, administer R2Play to youth athletes and participate in a follow up interview to learn about their experience with R2Play. The total time commitment is five hours over four non-consecutive days.

Participants will receive a $50 gift card (youth), or a $200 gift card (clinician) to thank them for their time. Parking will be reimbursed. Volunteer hours are available upon request.
