Children and Teens in Charge of their Health: A feasibility study of solution-focused coaching to foster healthy lifestyles in children and young people with physical disabilities
CATCH Study
Summary
We want to see whether a type of coaching called “solution-focused coaching” makes it easier for young people with physical disabilities to be in charge of their own health. This coaching will help young people set goals around healthy eating and doing exercise that is right for you. We also want to hear what you think about healthy habits and what you think about solution-focused coaching.

What's Involved
You will be asked to come to either the Bloorview Research Institute or Thames Valley Children’s Centre in London, Ontario (whichever is closest) 4 times over a 12 month period. Every time you are here, you will complete questionnaires, assessments and interviews. We will also take body measurements like your height, weight, waist circumference and skinfold thickness. We will ask you to walk or push yourself as fast as you can for 6 minutes.
You will be randomly assigned to either receive coaching for 6 months or a booklet on healthy eating and physical activity. If you are in the coaching group, you will get this booklet too.
If you are receiving coaching, you will meet with a coach 8 times for up to 1 hour each. This will last for 6 months. The first session will be in your home and the rest will be online. The coach will help you to set physical activity or health eating goals. They will help you to reach your goals. After you finish all of the coaching, you will take 1 – 2 photos every month. This will help the researchers understand what your lifestyle looks like after coaching. You will bring 6 – 8 of your photos to share with us at the end of the study.
Deadline
