Your child doesn't need 'fixing' is key in this parenting course

By Louise Kinross

Flourishing Together is a free, six-part online course designed to help families with children with disabilities thrive.

Lessons are led by Dr. Elaine Cook, a reseacher who manages Holland Bloorview's Humanistic Education and Training Program. They include interviews with parents of children with a variety of disabilities and clinicians as well as lesson summaries and resources you can download.

A key concept is that every child is already whole and doesn't need fixing. Parents are encouraged to have "good enough" expectations and to see their child's worth as an internal experience not related to outcomes like school grades.

The course is available in English and French and was made possible through the support of the Slate Family Foundation and March of Dimes Canada.

Its rich, evidence-based content will appeal to parents, professionals and anyone who wants to better understand families raising children with disabilities.
