Upcoming changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced changes to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). These updates introduce new co‑payments for certain health products and services covered under the program.
What clients and families need to know
Starting May 1, 2026, IFHP‑eligible clients will be required to pay:
- $4 for each eligible prescription medication filled or refilled
- 30 per cent of the cost for other eligible supplemental health products and services, including:
- Dental care
- Assistive devices (e.g. prosthetics, mobility aids, hearing aids)
- Home care and long‑term care
- Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech‑language therapy
- Medical supplies and equipment
Co‑payments must be paid directly to IFHP-registered health care providers at the time services are received. A detailed list of affected services is available on the IRCC information sheet found here.
What this means for Holland Bloorview clients
At this time:
- Orthotics & prosthetics and dental services will require the 30 per cent co‑payment, as outlined by IRCC.
- For equipment or supplies received after May 1, families will need to pay the 30 per cent co‑payment directly to our vendors.
Holland Bloorview clinical teams will work with clients and families to explore funding options early in the care journey. Additional details for orthotics & prosthetics and dental clients will be shared directly by those service areas.
