What is Zippy's Friends?

Zippy’s Friends is an innovative, evidence-based mental health promotion program that increases coping and social skills in children. It helps equip them to better handle the everyday challenges and difficulties they will encounter throughout life. Cost of the program is $150.00.

Who is Zippy's Friends for?

The program is for children ages 7-12 years of age and their caregivers. If your child would benefit from increasing their coping and social skills, and is able to:

  • Consistently attend 9 sessions (10am-11:30am) on a Saturday morning
  • Client and same caregiver are required to attend all sessions
  • Participate and attend to tasks and activities for up to 90 minutes
  • Able to communicate verbally in English
  • Engage in a structured group setting with up to 10 children

Caregivers to attend a workshop at same time as child's programming each week to share information and help reinforce the children's learnings.

What does Zippy's Friends talk about?

Zippy's Friends is built around 6 stories about children and their pet insect, Zippy. Each story introduces challenges and issues that are familiar to young children. Each session begins with a story. The children then participate in fun activities such as drawing and role-playing games. These activities help the children explore and understand their feelings and behaviours and learn new coping skills.

  1. Feelings - to improve children’s abilities to recognise difficult feelings and identify coping strategies to deal with those feelings.
  2. Communication - to improve children’s abilities to communicate their feelings.
  3. Making and breaking relationships - to improve children’s abilities to make friends and to cope with rejection and loneliness.
  4. Conflict resolution - to improve children’s abilities to resolve conflicts.
  5. Dealing with changes and loss - to improve children’s abilities to cope with change and loss.
  6. We cope - to improve children’s abilities to use a variety of coping strategies
