Summer is finally here! With barbeque season is in full swing, we’re dishing out a couple reminders to make sure your festivities are safe and accessible for everyone.
When you’re preparing to host a BBQ it’s important that there is food that everyone can eat, and ways for everyone to have fun. Here are our Top #5 Tips to make sure you’re throwing an inclusive BBQ.
Tasty treats.
Ask your guests about allergies, dietary restrictions, and eating assistance in advance, that way you can ensure there is something for everyone to eat and a comfortable way for them to enjoy their food.
Keeping cool.
Hopefully you’re grilling on a sunny day – so be sure that you have lots of hydrating drinks and shady spaces to accompany all the fun.
Making space for everyone.
If you are hosting your BBQ outside, make sure it is in an accessible space.
- Can folks easily get in and out of the space?
- Are there enough places for everyone to sit?
- Are there stairs people will need to prepare to navigate?
- Will they be able to use the washroom?
- Make sure you advise folks who might need some extra time to adjust to any physical hurdles they might encounter on the day.
- Is there a more accessible way to arrive at your home or local park (e.g. through a side gate or via a convenient parking lot)? Consider making this your main event entrance!
- Is there is enough space at your table to accommodate a wheel chair? Be sure there is a seat for everyone at your table!
It’s all fun and games.
Besides cooking you might want to entertain your guests. While sports can be fun, not everyone can participate so think about including some options like singing songs, a scavenger hunt, or arts and crafts.
Having sensory-friendly activities without loud noises and a quieter space is great for guests who prefer the volume be kept on low.
Breaking the ice.
While you probably know everyone invited to the BBQ that might not be the case for everybody else. Be sure to introduce your friends to each other and maybe prepare a fun ice-breaker activity like show and tell.

You’ll never know what people might need if you don’t ask. Connecting with your guests before your event is the best way to find out if there is anything you can do to make them feel more welcome and comfortable.
