Dr. Sally Lindsay elected to prestigious College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is excited to announce that Dr. Sally Lindsay – senior scientist in the Bloorview Research Institute and associate professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto – has been elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Lindsay is the second Holland Bloorview scientist to be appointed, joining Dr. Barbara Gibson who was elected in 2016.

"I am very honoured and thrilled to become a part of the Royal Society of Canada as a new Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. I’m humbled to be recognized among such a talented and diverse pool of Canadian leaders from across the country,” says Dr. Lindsay. “Most importantly, I’m delighted to see important research from the Bloorview Research Institute being recognized by this distinguished group.”

Launched in 2014, Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists reflect Canadians who, at an early stage in their career, have demonstrated a high level of achievement and excellence. The College is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership.

"Dr. Lindsay’s contributions to the field of childhood disability have been impactful and diverse,” says Dr. Tom Chau, Vice-President, Holland Bloorview’s research institute. “Her research engages the community, schools, employers, and many others to study inclusion for youth with disability. Her research is rooted in the vision of a future of no boundaries. As a new member of the College, Dr. Lindsay will continue to champion the perspectives of young people with disabilities on the national stage. I have no doubt that her scientific efforts will have lasting impact on the Canadian society."

“The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto is delighted that Dr. Sally Lindsay has been elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of her superb scholarship,” says Dr. Susan Rappolt, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, University of Toronto.” Dr. Lindsay’s membership in the College of New Scholars follows many other awards for her program of research. Through her collaborations with local and national partners, and her mentorship of research trainees, Dr. Lindsay is creating evidence that will improve the educational, occupational and social outcomes of children and youth with disabilities. Dr. Lindsay engages with government ministries and private agencies to translate her research evidence into policies and practices that decrease stigma and increase educational and workforce opportunities for people with disabilities.”

The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) was established in 1882 as the senior Canadian collegium of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists. As Canada’s senior National Academy, the RSC exists to promote Canadian research and scholarly accomplishment in both of Canada’s official languages, mentor young scholars and artists, recognize academic and artistic excellence, and to advise governments, non-governmental organizations, and Canadians generally on matters of public interest.

This year, the College received 279 nominations for candidates from 49 different institutions across Canada. Fifty-two individuals were elected who will join the 288 current Members of the College. Dr. Lindsay’s nomination was selected by an internal RSC peer-review competition comprised of Fellows and Members of the College. Dr. Lindsay will hold her membership for seven years.

Congratulations, Dr. Lindsay!
