Detecting a Fast Optical Signal for Brain-Computer Interface Communication

Summary

We are currently recruiting able-bodied participants over the age of 18 for a research study on brain-computer interfaces. This research will contribute to the development of a communication device for individuals with severe motor impairment. This study will use near-infrared spectroscopy, which allows detection of brain activity by measuring changes in brain oxygenation and optical properties during performance of mental tasks.

We invite you to take part in a research study to help develop a communication device for individuals with severe motor impairment. 

Who can participate

To participate in this study, you must be over the age of 18, have normal or corrected-to-normal vision, be able to read and write in English, and have no health issues that may adversely affect the measurements or ability to follow protocol, including: degenerative disorders, cardiovascular disorders, respiratory disorders, psychiatric conditions, metabolic disorders or drug and alcohol-related conditions. 

 

 

What's Involved

Participants will attend 5 sessions in the PRISM Lab at Holland Bloorview, each session will be approximately an hour and a half. During each session changes in brain optical properties and oxygenation will be recorded with near-infrared spectroscopy. A headband will be placed over your forehead with probes placed in holes of the headband to touch your skin. For 2 of the 5 sessions, your brain activity will also be recorded with electroencephalography (EEG). EEG electrodes will be placed on your forehead with adhesive foam disks and conductive gel. None of the equipment causes pain or discomfort. Participants will receive a small token of appreciation, a $25 gift card, to thank them for their time.
