The purpose of the study is to examine the safety and effects of riluzole vs. placebo for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptoms (e.g., social function, repetitive behaviours, anxiety, irritability, and hyperactivity) in children and adolescents with ASD.
This is a 4-month pilot study of riluzole in ASD. You and your child will be asked to come in for a screening session, through talking with you and completing some assessments we will determine if your child meets eligibility criteria. If your child meets criteria, then you will receive either riluzole or placebo. A placebo is a fake drug that looks, smells, and tastes like the actual drug, but is not the drug at all. You will be asked to come back to Holland Bloorview every two weeks for visits for 3 months while your child is taking the drug.
